THERE IS A FACE ON MY GRANDMA’S CLOTHES
I started learning French this week, and I’ve decided that to pace myself with a little French reading, I would be reading The Chronicles of Narnia. Not head-on, but when I feel serious, I’ll do it.
I’ve read Narnia multiple times already too, so if I get stuck with a word in French, I can discern its meaning from memory. :)
I read a Narnia Confession recently that said this:
Susan’s ending was just unforgivable. The transition is realistic and always expected given her character traits, but when you really delve into the fact that her entire family got killed in a train crash just because she got into “lipstick and nylon and invitations,” it’s just wrong.
Were we reading the same version of The Last Battle?
When you die in Narnia, you die in our world.
When you die in our world, you cannot go back to Narnia.
Peter, Edmund, Lucy, and the others died defending/believing in Narnia.
(I haven’t actually read The Last Battle in a while but)
I don’t know why Lewis chose to have everybody but Susan die in a train accident, but he did.
Susan gave up on Narnia and deemed it childish because that was easier than accepting the fact she was too old to go there anymore and had to find Aslan in our world instead.
(Hint: He’s Jesus.)
That’s a childish reaction, IMO.
But seriously.
Her family did not die because she grew up.
Her family died because they got into an accident.
Period.
Lewis knew what he was doing with Susan, and I believe that had he continued her story, she’d have found her way back to Narnia.
She wasn’t allowed back to Narnia because she was too old.
Ed and Lu were no longer allowed in Narnia after VDT—except for in TLB, when they return at the end.
But they didn’t give up on it like Su did. They continued to believe.
And for that they were welcomed into Aslan’s Country.
And I firmly believe that Su would’ve been too, had she continued to believe in Narnia even though she was no longer young enough to visit.
Childlike faith.
Grow up, but continue believing in Aslan.
That’s what he wanted them to do, and Su failed to do it as of TLB.
That doesn’t mean she wouldn’t be welcomed back with open arms were she to decide to believe again—she would be.
She just didn’t get to go to Aslan’s Country with her siblings because she didn’t believe like they did.
It had
almostnothing to do with her decision to go to parties/be a grown up and everything to do with her unbelief in something she had experienced.Stop bashing Lewis’s decisions.
It makes me angry.
So I was thinking to myself about how George Macdonald was such a cool guy and how great I thought he was.
And then I saw his beard.
There are not words to describe my admiration of this man now.
YES
